The Gold Standard Tank Sealer will work. Just follow the directions found on this page for Fiberglass Tanks: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/Gold-Standard-Tank-Sealer-Information-Instructions_ep_39-1.html

The procedure for sealing a Fiberglass Tank is the same except for a variance in Step #2 - RustBlast. For this type of tank, thoroughly wet the fiberglass surface for only 2 minutes using RustBlast. Drain and rinse well with water as directed. Because you are not prepping metal or dissolving rust, RustBlast may be saved and re-used for future use. RustBlast will, however, treat the fiberglass surface by giving it a more acidic pH level & by leaving a zinc phosphate coating ideal for Sealer adhesion.

Also, it is important to make sure that the tank is completely dry inside before sealing. Drying is best accomplished by introducing forced air into the tank by using a shop vac, blow dryer, or fan. (NOTE: Drying is a critical step for sealing fiberglass tanks. Fiberglass tends to hold moisture and if the tank is not dried completely, the Sealer will not adhere properly.)

IMPORTANT: It is also very critical to methodically coat the entire fiberglass tank completely & thoroughly with the Sealer. If any part of the fiberglass surface should accidentally be left exposed or unsealed, however, these unprotected areas will be very susceptible to deterioration by alcohol blended fuels and it is therefore highly recommended that these fuels not be used in fiberglass tanks even after sealing. After coating the tank, remember to drain well to avoid pooling and puddles.

We do not recommend partially coating the inside of a tank because the Gold Sealer Tank Sealer coating will have a tendency to let go where the coating ends.

You can find complete instructions for the Gold Standard Gas Tank Sealer here: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/Gold-Standard-Tank-Sealer-Information-Instructions_ep_39-1.html

Hi, I have a 99% solid 500gal diesel tank.

I just cleaned the tank to check for any pits on the bottom
where water was laying. There are several shallow on one end in a area on the bottom center line. Can I coat the tank partially on the bottom ~ 12" off either side of the center line?
~1 gal of KBS?
My concern is if the tank isn't completely encapsilated with KBS,
the fuel will ge behind the coating an cause failure.

Any info, advice, appreciated. Thanks

It sounds like you did not get all of the holes patched or you did not get the entire inside of the tank coated.

You will want to strip out the Gold Standard Tank Sealer with the KBS Strip.

Then you will want to patch your holes using the BackBone Reinforcing Mesh or the NuMetal Epoxy Putty.

Once you have the holes patches, you will do the KBS 3 Step Tank Sealing System.

"My question is weather the paint will withstand application to water jacket surfaces that will be constantly wet with water up to 180 degrees F."

Yes. That should be fine.

"These surfaces will all be media blasted with Aluminum Oxide - after which will be cleaned with detergent, washed with hot water, and allowed to dry completely. I don't plan to use any other prep before using your product. Is this acceptable?"

As long as there is a sufficient surface profile for adhesion, this will be fine. DO NOT use an solvent-based cleaners.

Hello, I just ordered a quart of KBS rustseal in iron oxide. My plan is to use this to seal the internal casting surfaces of an outboard marine engine. The internal parts of the engine were originally painted with a ferrous chrome primer - of course which, is no longer available. After a long search for a substitute paint, I found your product. My question is weather the paint will withstand application to water jacket surfaces that will be constantly wet with water up to 180 degrees F. The paint will also be applied to the crankcases where raw gasoline/oil vapor (2 cycle) will constantly wash over it. These surfaces will all be media blasted with Aluminum Oxide - after which will be cleaned with detergent, washed with hot water, and allowed to dry completely. I don't plan to use any other prep before using your product. Is this acceptable? Also, not sure if I will apply with brush or use my air pot. I did purchase your thinner also. Lastly, what solvent is best used for cleaning my spray gun after use of your product?

Thank You

It sounds like it was way too thick on the bottom. That is usually why you would get blisters.

The best solution would be to strip the tank and coat it again this time making sure you drained it really well and did not let it puddle.

With that said, you could try to break off the blisters and if you still have sealer under it, that may work.

Let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions.

I really hate to say this but I am having problems with the coating in my motorcycle tank. Im really bummed out. I thought I did it perfect. I had the motorcycle tank perfectly clean with the aqua clean and the rust blast. Then I took a hair dryer and actually let it blow through the fill hole and vent out the hole where the pet cock mounts for over 3 hours. The tank was BONE DRY. I used a very bright flashlight to verify no water. I let it cure for over a week. Actually more like 10 days. I filled the tank and rode it for a week. I thought everything was great until I went to fill up today. My stomach sank. There are huge blisters at the bottom of the tank. I thought it may have been an optical illusion with the gas being in it and the light shining in the tank. So I get a flashlight and shine it to the bottom looking through the gas. Sure enough, HUGE blisters. I still didnt believe it so I straightened a coat hanger to poke the blister and I did poke it and it broke through. It was not soft, it was pretty hard coating to poke through. Do you think I can just empty the tank and just break off the big pieces???? Maybe it was my fault. Maybe I let it pool up. The coating on the sides and top of the tank seems really tough and hard. Whats the best solution? I dont mind just breaking up the blisters but Im worried it will start flaking and clog up my filter.

Will you be removing the coatings that is on there now or keeping it? The BEST WAY would be to remove the coating that is on there now so that the RustSeal can bite into the metal.

You can find complete instructions for RustSeal here: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/RustSeal-Information-and-Instructions_ep_38-1.html

You can also find Instructional Videos here: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/KBS-Videos_ep_90-1.html

For your application, you will want to apply 3 coats of RustSeal.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

We are purchasing a new dumpster that will be used in close proximity to atlantic ocean. Would painting it with rust seal be a good idea to keep it from rusting? If so what steps would we need to take as it is painted metal with a smooth finish.
Thanks

I have photo's of the rusted surfaces but they aren't 3 megapixel unfortunately. But as I go on from here I'll bump the resolution up for you.

Thank you.
