OK, i have read lots of posts and forums about what to use to cover the bare metal on my car and am confused about it all.

I am going to strip the paint off my car to bare metal and want to know what to put on it to prevent rust from forming, it will sit for quite awhile without getting painted so i can do the rust repairs and straighten out the body. I will be doing a section at a time ie:roof then doors then boot etc.

What do i put on the bare metal as soon as i have finished that section, i was hoping to leave it in primer till the bodywork is done and i am ready to paint it. I am not sure if i will paint it in Acrylic or 2 pac yet.

Regards,

Hi,
I am trying to treat a rust problem in the rear cargo area of my Mazda van.
The rust affects about 10% of the floor area.
I had the whole floor plastic bead blasted which got rid of all remaining paint, the bulk of the rust and enlarged the few holes that I discovered. There are dozens of small pinholes and a few holes 50mm in diameter or smaller.
The blasting guy told me to paint the whole floor with rust converter, let it cure (2 days) then power wire wheel the whole floor which I did.
I am taking the van to a panel shop next to get the holes welded closed/patched (no filler will be used).
I read your directions and I think I need to use Rustblast then Rustseal Galvanised steel with maybe a little Numetal putty for smoothing the patched areas.
Is this all I need to do?

what is required to paint over galvabond tubing? I'm making an off road trailer but don't want a black finish, like Blacktop.
Can i use just Rust Seal followed by DiamonSeal?

Can you tell me the amount of Aquaklean, Rustblast and Gold sealer I would need for this size tank. Also exterior coating recommendations. This is a baffled tank and has corrosion on the outside to go along with a pin hole in one corner. I plan to tig weld the corner after cleaning. Do you see any problems with this? Just don't want to blow myself up after cleaning.

I have a 1952 FX Holden I am restoring. I am replacing the outer sill panels as they are moderately rusted, with some small holes. I planned on coating the inner sill surfaces with rust seal.

My question is, do you have any thought/suggestions re coating the welded inner portions of the panels?

I had thought of using a spray nozzle & accessing the inside of the sill through some holes drilled through the inner sill panel, much in the manner of rust proofing practice. These holes would them be sealed with rubber plugs. While this is not necessarily a 'perfect' solution, it's the best I can think of at present.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm very unhappy as I write this.I just bought the KBS tank sealer kit in hopes of saving money and not buying new tanks for my truck.I spent the first 2 days of Memorial weekend cleaning and preping the tanks. I followed the instructions to a "T".This afternoon when I put the GOld Seal in the tank,I rolled it around for about 15 minutes per the instructions. When I tried to drain the sealer I found that it was already setting up.I kept rolling and draining excess paint as best I could for about 45 minutes. When I finally finished it looked very good inside.Nice and smooth and no puddles that I could see.
When I checked the tank again after about 4 hours, the paint inside was bubbled and blisterd extremly bad.Now obviously I must do the extra work, cost and effort to strip the tank and start over. For this time and effort,I wish I'd just bought a new tank for $140.
I live in Southern Calif, I did the work in about 78 deg temp and almost no humidity, it was a perfect weekend.
Can you PLEASE tell me what I did wrong?
I feel discouraged and "gun-shy" now and thinking I'll just spend the money on new tanks and forget using a sealer.
I feel sick to think I must spend another $60 on a tank kit+buying stripper and the time end effort to do all of this work over again.
I had high hopes for KBS, can you tell me what I did wrong so I can continue and get a good seal without blisters and bubbles?

Hi

I tried KBS Rust seal (Satin black) for the first time today, with mixed results. I had some sandblasted car parts (disassembled wind screen wipers and some larger pieces), but because I'd handled them a bit, I decided to test the AquaKlean and RustBlast.

The first RustSeal coat went on nicely. All the brush marks smoothed right out, and I got a nice even finish. The parts were pretty fiddly to paint, so the jar I had transfered my stirred paint into was open for quite a while (maybe an hour). There wasnt too much left in the jar, so for the second coat, I used FRESH paint from my cling-wrap sealed tin (opened only while stirring & pouring).

I waited 3-4 hours before applying the second coat. To avoid spilling paint, I tried transferring the paint to a brand new jar using a clean 20mL disposable syringe.

The second coat did not work as well. The paint seemed not to stay evenly spread over the first coat. Even the paint on the walls of the jar (never before used) seemed to thin out to nothing in some spots, leaving small paint free circles behind. There were a few bubbles appearing while I was applying the paint too. This was essentially fresh paint. I have let this coat cure, but it doesnt have a nice surface like the first coat did. Its pretty streaky, as it didnt level out, and in parts doesnt completely cover the first coat.

I did first reuse the original brush, which I had given a quick clean with #1 thinner (it was dry and still soft). I thought this might have caused the problem, but I found a new brush, and got the same result. After starting I never handled the parts without gloves so I dont believe it was surface contamination.

Had it gone as planned, I would have applied KBS fusion within 6 hours and later put another UV resistant top coat over it.

I've watched the videos, and followed the instructions carefully, but I have quite a bit of this paint now, so want to make absolutely sure I use it properly!

So to my Q's....
* Any idea what might have caused the problem?

* To get a smooth final finish (before priming, top coating etc.), should I sand (400 grit?) and apply another coat of RustSeal?

More generally...
* Can subsequent coats still be applied sucessfully over fully cured RustSeal? I felt a bit pressured to apply a full second coat even though I wasnt confident that is was going on properly.

* Providing its not too humid and the second coat is applied within a few hours, can you use the same paint you originally poured out? Even if the lid's been off for a while? I cling-wrapped the remainder when first done, but eventually decided to use fresh paint for the second coat.

* Should a new brush be used for the second coat, even if the first was cleaned with the KBS thinners?

Regards,

Pat
