"I am painting a 4x4 chassis and was thinking of using different rustseal colours to track where I have and haven't painted. Is this advisable?"

It is your choice. If the top coat chips away at some point, you are left with another color under it.

"Is there any possibility of the underlying colour bleeding through?"

Maybe with Off-White over Black, but I do not think that would be an issue at all.

"I have also been told by a KBS rep to rather use the same colour as stone chips might reveal the underlying colour. Stone chips!? Do I need to be concerned about the paint chipping then?"

Our paint is almost indestructible, but not completely indestructible. If it does chip, you will have another color under it.

Here is information on our colors of RustSeal and their differences: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/RustSeal--Which-Color-Should-I-Use_ep_46-1.html

The Resin is the Same for all RustSeal, so they are all very durable. Some are more abrasion resistant.

All RustSeal is made with the same resin, so it is all extremely durable and tough. If you are looking for better abrasion resistance, you could go with the Galvanized Steel, the Oxide Red, the Guardian Green of the Silver colors. But like I said, all of the colors are very durable and very tough.

You can find complete instructions for RustSeal here: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/RustSeal-Information-and-Instructions_ep_38-1.html

I read the section on Rustseal color choice on the website but I thought I would post the question to be sure I dont misunderstand.

Is there a real durablity difference between the different colors? And if so, could you please elaborate?

My application will be on an indoor high traffic motorcycle hydraulic lift, so it would have the usual tools, parts, and mild chemicals exposure on it. I'm partial to the gloss black but would gladly sacrifice color, for durablity. The lift is 1/4" steel diamond plate that measures 7'x2', and I'd like to coat the top with 2-3 coats,( is 2 coats enough?) and the bottom with one coat. Will a pint will cover 56 sq ft?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

should i remove the rust seal and start again

Hiya,

I have got air bubbles in quite a few areas of my painted floorpan. I beleive I was applying it too thickly. I presume I need to sand these areas down and re-paint?
If they do need repainting then do I have to go back to metal or just until the surface is smooth and the air bubbles have been exposed?

Thanks,

Yep. I actually had to start using 320 grit, because like you said the 400 was taking too long.

I noticed as I am sanding the rust seal smooth, there are "freckles" here and there. The freckles are small shallow dimples in the paint, perhaps from my inexperience in spraying. You can see them because they are concave and they remain black while the sanded areas turn grey.
Does the fusion self etch primer, my next coat to lay down, act like a filler as well to hide these small imperfections or should I spray another coat of rustseal first?

Thanks

I'd give it a couple of days at least before sanding. 400 grit should be good but it may take alot of sanding. If while sanding, you penetrate down to the bare steel, then I would apply another coat of RustSeal. If not, just apply your topcoat.

Hope that helps.

Stayed up till 3am (waited for kids to be in bed) to spray for my first time ever. I sprayed a cab with 2 coats of rust seal and noticed some runs and dust in the finish this morning. I know rust seal is not a finish coat, but I want to eliminate the flaws before I spray a top.

1.How long should I wait before I sand out the imperfections?
2.Would 400 grit work well enough?
3.After sanding the rustseal smooth, do I have to reapply another coat of rust seal or can I just continue with the top coat.

I know of several people that have used the Chassis Coater Kit and a top coat of Blacktop on motorcycle frames and trailing arms. It would still be a good idea however to have the frame sand, or media blasted to remove all traces of factory paint or powder coat RustSeal will do a much better job if bonded to bare metal. Also You may still want to cover threaded holes with small rubber corks from the hardware store (about $.25 a pc) RustSeal and BlackTop is tough stuff, you may find yourself retapping threaded holes.

The best thing about painting your frame with Rustseal\BlackTop, if it does pick up a few chips over time you can repair it. Good Luck repairing Powder Coating.

I'm restoring a motorcycle that I think had a factory powder coated frame. I had planned to get the frame and several brackets sandblasted and powder coated, but now I'm wondering if the KBS Chassis Coater kit plus a Topcoat might produce similar results. It would save me some money and reduce the amount of work required in masking every threaded hole, plus I get that DIY satisfaction.
What do you think? PS, I will be using the KBS Motorcycle Tank Sealer kit on the tank as well...

"I want to confirm that if I spray on my topcoat within 6-12 hours (according do your diagram here: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/Flow-Chart--RustSeal-on-Steel_ep_87-1.html) I do not need to sand and etch it as long as I do it within this timeframe correct?"

Yes. That is correct.

"What categories of topcoat paints (a brand recommendation would be nice), in your experience, adhere well. I'm looking for a UV protective option. Are the paints I should avoid?"

You will want to use a good Automotive Grade or Marine Grade Top Coat.

"Lastly, I anticipate 3 coats of RustSeal. Is a quart enough to do a plow or - do I need a gallon (I think around 40 sq ft front/back)? What are the coverages?"

1 Quart might be enough, but you might want to get 2 quarts to be on the safe side.

I have a snow plow that I intend to sandblast, then RustBlast and RustSeal. I would like to topcoat it with a color that matches the red RustSeal very closely. A few questions:

As always, pictures help but, it sounds like you're just applying the RustSeal a little too heavy. As with most all paints, they are best applied in multiple thin coats and not heavy coats as you'll have varying rates of curing. When applied thin, the film thickness cures through and through all at once. You can allow these areas to cure completely sand them smooth and reapply another coat. Also a few questions:

What color are you using?
What's the temperature and/or humidity where you are?

first of all i have had great success with most products used from KBS

the biggest issue i have been having is that i get alot of runs in some irregualr shaped parts im sure i can avoid that by brushing it on alot thinner and not as heavy

the opther thing is that i see alot of air bubles of some sort on few areas of the material after dried.

what causes this? needs to be stired more? thined out or reduced?

its making my restoration look of poor quality when its really not, please give me some input on this so i can correct the problem.

i can include pictures if needwed.

Spraying is always best, but the brush marks flow out nicely with the RustSeal in any finish.
