I finally got sandblasted parts back to where I could try out RustSeal Satin Black that I ordered in March. Parts were treated with phosphoric acid. New to product, I read full instructions. I stirred product until it FELT consistant, though stirrer came out virtually clear. I then poured out enough for parts being coated. Paint had virtually no pigment, even paint removed from bottom of stirrer went on barely darker than clear. Paint had no staying power and ran off like solvent with only the sheen of grey tinted glossy clear remaining.
What'd I do wrong, or did I get a bad batch? I'll try a second coat per instructions. I sure didn't expect a gloss finish and I didn't expect it to run off worse than POR 15. I also figured it would at least give some color, rather than than look like gloss finish dirty steel. What's the best way to strip this stuff off, if it doesn't work on second coat?

When in March did you order the RustSeal? While the possibility of a "bad batch" is not impossible, it is highly unlikely. Please provide the batch number from the bottom of the can or your order number and we can reference from that. There is no chance of satin black RustSeal after being stirred completely (or even just slightly stirred) would come out anything but black black. And you are right when you say nothing runs off worse than POR 15.
As I said, provide us the batch # or order #, and where you purchased it from and we'll help you from there.

Order date was 3/13/2008 order # 507581 batch #345701
I continued with painting and found 2nd coat covered much better and by 3rd coat was almost completely opaque. 3 coats though is a bit thick for reassembling these suspension parts. There was still a lack of coverage around sharply raised features (particulates appear to drain away before drying and leave clear coat). Maybe conditions were not optimum, I measured 72 degrees F. and 68% humidity. Still I was not expecting high gloss finish, that part was consistent at either black or clear areas. Thanks for your concern!

OK, thanks for that information. We've pulled a quart of that batch number, gave it a good stir, and cannot duplicate the issues you mentioned. It is black black. Sounds like a stirring issue. Over time and temperature fluctuations, the resins and pigments in all coatings have a tendency to settle and/or separate and must be stirred well while using a lifting action. This should be done for a minimum of two minutes with any coating to get a uniform appearance. The conditions you stated were fine and not extreme by any means. The fact that the high gloss appears just confirms the stirring issue.

Thanks, I'll strip it down to bare metal and try again!
