  1. I've been using rust seal on my marine engines whith great success. I'd like to paint the entire bilge as well. Will rust seal withstand continuous oily fresh and or salt water imersion?
  2. Absolutely! In total submersion applications it is recommended you apply three thin coats.

  4. Hi JJ and Jim,
I was directed here when I asked for some suggestions on an engine paint for my boat, could you possibly recommend a specific product to use on my gas engine and parts?
    thank you guys,
    Tony
  5. Tony, I tried one pint of KBS Rust Seal just to see how it worked before taking on the whole job of paining both my engines. I was trully suprised by how well it worked. I used off white, as that's what the original color of 8-92 Detroit Diesels are. I did spend many hours in the engine room preping, but basiclly once I got to the actual painting, it was a breeze. I first sprayed it but found that brushing works so well that I opted for avoiding overspray. The paint flows out beautifully so you don't have to be too fussy. Just slop it on with one of those crappy throw away brushes and it comes out great. Some areas like where I had scraped or wire brushed to the metal I had to put on three coats. Everywhere else because I used the similar shade of white, I got away with two. Overall, I am very pleased with the KBS product. That is why I inquired about it's use in the bilge itself. Good luck.

  6. thanks for the reply jj,

so as far as prep you mostly scraped and wire brushed and was able to go without any primer? I installed a long block engine season before last which I prep'ed and painted myself just using parts store spray can paint which of coarse didn't last and now the block is rusting in areas it gets hot. So I'm ready to pull the engine again and redo it, this time with the right stuff. so of coarse prep is goning to be the big issue because I wil try to mininumize the tear down to re-paint
