    I'm wondering what's the best way to treat seams in the floor pan of my car. I've just done the first rough clean up of the floor and removed the sound deadening insulation and a thick bead of silicon that was laid over these seams.

    Should I give them the Aqua Clean / Rust Blast / Rust Seal treatment and then put some kind of sealant over the Rust Seal? I don't think the Rust Seal on it's own will cover the gap.

    There are also these little hatches in the floor. They weren't sealed with silicon but were covered by the thick layer of sound deadening material.

    The paint around the edge of the hole will be removed with paint stripper so there'll just be bare metal there. So I assume I'll have to leave the covers off, give the floor the full treatment and then stick them back in place with some sort of sealant. What sort of sealant would be suitable to use to adhere to the Rust Seal?

    Dave .. Our Trunk & Floorpan Kit would give you the products you'd need to prep and seal your floor panels, (Instructions found here: http://www.kbs-coatings.com/KBS-Trunk-Floorpan-Repair-Kit-Information-Instructions_ep_50-1.html) however when it comes to those seams I see in the pictures you've sent, you'll need a more flexible seam sealer. We are in the process of developing just such a product but will not have it available for several months. In the meantime there are similar products available (ex. Tiger Seal by UPOL). But please remember to apply the RustSeal to the seam areas prior to using seam sealer and then apply a coat over the seam sealer once cured.

    Many thanks for your reply. It's great to be able to get help with the details of this job.

    Today I went looking for a clear polyurethane sealant similar to Tiger Seal. But unfortunately I couldn't find one. I live in a small town in Australia and the range is limited.

    I wanted a clear sealant because I want to be able to monitor the condition of the floor pan after it is sealed. I'm using clear Rust Seal.

    The only two clear sealants I could find that looked like they might be suitable are a neutral cure silicon and a neutral cure co-polymer sealant.
    They both look like they might be OK except when it comes to painting over them. Of course the silicon can't be painted over and the co-polymer requires a water based paint before painting with an "oil based paint". So I'm not sure if Rust Seal can be painted over the co-polymer directly or whether it would require a water based paint first.

    So I'm wondering how important is it to paint over the sealant? And do you think either of these sealant are suitable?

    If you apply RustSeal under the seam sealer it's not as necessary to paint over, however that would be best as it helps in sealing the entire surface.

    Just be sure to use a sealer that's labeled "paintable" and you should be good.
